How to Organize Your Attic - 3 Steps to Maximized Attic Storage

Austen Seekabow

Storage space is not something most homes overflow with, especially in areas where basements are not prevalent. Luckily, many homeowners have a usable attic that can come to the rescue and help meet their household storage needs. Through proper labeling, sorting and stacking, your attic can become a useful area of your home, instead of the part of your house that just holds up the roof. These three simple steps can help you to organize your attic space and regain the benefit of the storage that it can provide for you and your household.

* Purge and Clean. You should begin by removing everything from the attic, if possible. After the attic is empty, you should take this opportunity to sweep it out. This would also be a good time to use a flashlight and check around your attic for any signs of water getting in through the roof. It is always good to catch water damage before it makes it down into the house, and you do not want your possessions being damaged by water either.

* Sort and Pack. After you have moved everything out of the attic, it is time to sort everything. During this process, continually look for items that you could sell, donate or throw away. If your belongings are packed in cardboard boxes, it is advisable to replace those with plastic storage tubs with lids. These will better protect your personal property in the long run, and are much easier to stack and move around in cramped spaces. Clear plastic is preferable, but colored bins can be nice to store different seasonal decorations.

* Label and Store. As you repack your items, you should label them, on two sides and the top using masking tape or a label maker. As you reload your attic with your possessions, you should seek to align them in zones, or areas of commonality. Your Christmas decorations should go in one area for example. Things you use throughout the year should be kept near the access point to the attic. Items being stored for the long haul should be stacked in the back.

A properly organized attic is a wonderful place to store extra belongings and seasonal decorations. When you use good storage containers, and label your items thoroughly, it will be a breeze to retrieve needed items from your attic. If you follow these three simple steps on organizing your attic, you will tame that wild storage space, and turn it into a great asset for your home.
