BMW Modding On A Budget
Rand Stuck
For a lot of people, once they purchase a car, that is only the very start of a long and often costly project of modifying to result in increased BMW performance (http://www.autowerks.com/). There are many thousands of different decisions on how to go about this process. Where does one begin, what can be completed by the average home mechanic and what needs professional help? Also, where can you find the best parts economically? Finding parts is the part of modifying that you have considerable control over and where you can save the most time and money, if done correctly.
Now, there is more than one opinion on this subject. For BMWs, a lot of design and engineering was completed by the manufacturer to achieve a premium vehicle that is often a superior overall performer than many of its competition. It's way too easy to end up going backwards in your search for performance by choosing inferior parts, installing them incorrectly or not matching up the performance levels of different systems on your car. Also, BMW is supplying a line of its own aftermarket parts so you can be confident of the same quality and engineering in these parts just like the rest of your car. The downside is that these parts are often much more costly than their competition.
So, how can you locate quality parts for your BMW? I am a big fan of doing research online. There are many good user groups out there made up of many thousands of BMW owners. With a little work you can often find a member with your exact vehicle who has already done similar modifications to their vehicle and can often provide some valuable information on what works, which supplier has the best price, installation tips and more. Some of my favorites are bimmerforums, E46fanatics.com and roadfly.org. Time invested here can save you signifiacnt money and frustration so you don't have to make the same mistakes as others have.
Another great resource that is often overlooked is eBay. The number of choices can be overwhelming and there are a bunch of cheap, knock-off parts that you should try to avoid. If you purchase from a reputable supplier with excellent feedback and do your homework on exactly the part you need and at what price, you can really maximize your modifying budget. You can find new parts, OEM BMW parts (http://www.autowerks.com/) and used BMW parts (http://www.autowerks.com/) quickly and easily to make your tuning project a winner.
