Finding The Best Parts For Your BMW
Rand Stuck
For many bmw enthusiasts, once they purchase a car, that is just the very start of an extensive and frequently costly project of tuning to achieve increased BMW performance (http://www.autowerks.com/). There are literally hundreds of different decisions on how to go about this process. Where does one begin, what can be completed by the typical home mechanic and what requires professional assistance? Also, where can one purchase the best parts economically? Locating parts is the part of modding that you have considerable control over and where you can save the most time and expense, if you do your homework.
There is more than one school of thought on this topic. With respect to BMWs, significant design and engineering was completed by the manufacturer to achieve a world class vehicle that is typically a better overall performer than just about all of its competition. It's way too easy to end up heading backwards in your search for performance by buying the wrong parts, installing them incorrectly or not matching up the performance characteristics of different systems on your car. In fact, BMW is now supplying a line of its own aftermarket performance parts so you can be assured of the same quality and engineering in these parts just like the rest of your car. The negative side is that these parts are often more costly than their non-BMW counterparts.
So, how can one source premium parts for your car? I am a big fan of doing research online. There are some good user groups made up of many thousands of BMW owners. With very little work you can often find a member with your exact BMW who has already done the same modifications to their BMW and can often give valuable information on what works, who has the lowest price, installation instructions and more. Some of my favorites include bimmerforums, E46fanatics.com and roadfly.org. Time invested here can save you a lot of money and frustration so you don't have to repeat the mistakes of others.
Another excellent resource that is often overlooked is eBay. The selection of parts is often overwhelming and there are a bunch of cheap, knock-off parts that you should avoid. If you purchase from a quality supplier with good feedback and do your homework on the part you need and at what price, you can significantly extend your modding budget. You can purchase new parts, OEM BMW parts (http://www.autowerks.com/) and used BMW parts (http://www.autowerks.com/) quickly and easily to make your performance project a success.
