Used Parts For Your BMW?

Rand Stuck

For many people, once they buy a new vehicle, that is only the very start of a long and sometimes expensive process of tuning to achieve higher BMW performance (http://www.autowerks.com/). There are many hundreds of different choices on how you accomplish this. Where do you start, what can be completed by the typical home mechanic and what needs pro assistance? Also, where can you find quality parts economically? Sourcing parts is the area of tuning that you have the most control over and where you can save the most time and expense, if done correctly.

There is more than one opinion on this subject. For BMWs, a lot of design and engineering was done by the factory to achieve a world class vehicle that is arguably a superior performer than just about all of its peers. It is far too easy to whind up going backwards in your search for performance by selecting flawed parts, installing them incorrectly or not matching up the performance levels of different systems on your vehicle. In fact, BMW is supplying a line of its own aftermarket performance parts so you can be confident of the same quality and engineering in these parts as the rest of your car. The downside is that these parts are often more expensive than their competition.

So, how should you source quality parts for your vehicle? I am a big believer of doing research online. There are many exceptional user groups made up of thousands of BMW owners. With a little effort you can often find a member with your same BMW who has already made similar modifications to their BMW and can often give valuable information on what works, who has the most competitive price, install tips and more. Some of the best include bimmerforums, e46fanatics and roadfly.org. Time spent here can save you signifiacnt cost and frustration so you don't have to make the same mistakes as others have.

Another excellent source that is often overlooked is eBay. The number of choices can be overwhelming and there are many cheaply made, knock-off parts that you should stay away from. However, if you buy from a quality supplier with excellent feedback and do your homework on the part you need and at what price, you can significantly maximize your tuning budget. You can find new parts, OEM BMW parts (http://www.autowerks.com/) and used BMW parts (http://www.autowerks.com/) quickly and easily to make your modding project a a show stopper.
