The Land of Age of Conan has Finally Arrived
Bert Mitchel
Described as the most violent MMO this century, Funcoms gaming translation of Robert E. Howards popular series is now available - Age of Conan.
Earlier this year, Funcom had the enviable task of announcing their pre-launch population of over 500,000 quite an achievement. The company had some success with its first MMORPG Anarchy Online, with a strong turnout upon launch but an inability to monopolize with future expansions. Shadowlands, the games second expansion, received widespread approval at all levels and rose the game to new found levels, but could not compete with the success of World of Warcraft.
The main topic of Age of Conan, parallel to that of the Conan lore, is blood and violence with no shortage of either. Sticking closely to the concept set forward by the Conan series, players are sucked into a world where mercy is not an option.
Hyboria is not a world in which good must triumph over adversity, Age of Conan is different. Hyboria is a daunting world in which good and evil must be challenged and the fairytale world is very far away. Age of Conan is worlds apart from games such as World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings Online.
Hacking and slashing away in AoC is as violent as Howards vision with a revolutionary combat system that lets gamers directly control the bloodshed. AoC uncovers an entirely fresh dimension of interactiveness with combat, with each weapon offering a different pattern of striking opponents.
Age of Conan could be one of the first major online gaming episodes to go multi-platform, with implementation predicted for at least one major video game platform. It may not be long until players on both PC and games console can interact in the same online world.
