Ten Necessary Boat Accessories

Keith Sanders

Without the right boat accessories, not only can your trip become a nightmare but it can also become life threatening. Having the right boating accessories can help you to get the most out of your boating experience. Consider some vital life saving accessories that you need to have for any type of boat.

First you will want to have lifejackets. Even for a short visit on the lake you will want to have lifejackets available. No one wants to have something go wrong on the lake, but it is a possibility that you should always be prepared for no matter what. Even if you are an expert swimmer you want to have lifejackets available in case you need to end up in the water. You also want to make sure you have proper lifejackets, so children should have lifejackets that fit them specifically.

Second you want to have flares on hand. This is the best way to let other know that you are having a problem with your boat. Even without a major problem, there are other possibilities that you need to use a flare for. However, having a flare is the best way to ensure that you get help right away when anything goes wrong.

Third you want a radio. Any time you have problems far out where no one is around, your only solution is to radio for help. In a case of emergency a radio can be used to call another boat, a port or the coat guard. Radios are an essential part of boating communication that you must have.

Fourth you need to have boat paddles, no matter what type of boat you have. Mechanical problems can always leave you stranded in the middle of a lake and you need to have some way to get back to shore. Paddles are the last resort and only method that can ensure you have the ability to get back to shore.

Different boats will also require different accessories. For instance a pontoon boat requires a ladder as a necessary accessories. A ladder enables people to get on and off your pontoon boat with little problem.

Another necessary accessory for a pontoon boat is bimini top or a cover. These are a form of canopy that can be taken off quickly and easily. They will help protect your passengers from the blistering sun on those hot summer days that you are enjoying your time out on the lake.

If you have an inflatable boat there are three necessary accessories you must have. The first is a pump to help inflate your boat, a high capacity foot pump can inflate a large boat in about ten minutes. Second you need a sail kit in order to get the most out of your time on the water and help maneuver your boat. Finally you will want to have a patch kit handy for the times when you need to quickly repair your boat.

Then finally for those who have a ski boat the necessary accessory is a swim platform. You will use this more than anything if you own a ski boat. It will make it a lot easier for swimmers and skiers to enter and exit your boat. This means no one has to jump or climb over the side of the boat after a tiring day on the lake.
