What is involved in Website Optimisation?

Carolyn Clayton

Website optimisation forms part of Search Engine Optimisation. It is a way of helping to get your website to the top of the search engine results.

As you are probably aware Search Engine Optimisation, SEO for short, is the process of promoting a website through keyword analysis and copywriting skills; it is when a website is optimised so that search engine spiders within sites such as Google and Yahoo, pick up your site and rank it higher up within the results. Website optimisation is along very similar lines to this and if you are undergoing search engine optimisation then you are more than likely going to have website optimisation done as the two together gives your site the best possible chance of appearing within the top ten of the search engines results.

Website optimisation and search engine optimisation are highly important if you want your website to perform well because if you think about it around 80% of the people who visit your site for the first time will have come from one of the major search engines so if you want your site to attract more people and gain a wider customer base then you will need to have website optimisation performed on your site. So what is involved when you have website optimisation performed on your site? Some of the basis changes that will be made will be done to the way in which your site is built up through the use of HTML. It involves tweaking the HTML code that builds up your entire website. It will also involve work being carried out on aspects such as:

" Meta-tagging " Re-writing your URLs " Image optimisation " Page Rank sculpting " Copywriting " Web usability " Branding

Submitting regularly to search engines and setting up link exchanges are known as external methods of driving traffic to your website but there are other internal methods that should be carried out as well; these internal methods should be applied as a way of improving rankings. One of these internal methods is known as website optimisation.

Website optimisation gives you a greater chance of climbing the search engines and gaining more traffic. If your website has been optimised it will dramatically improve your chances of getting targeted traffic and business from search engines, for most websites this is essential for search engine optimisation.

Website optimisation is a broad term but mainly focuses on the addition of text and images to a site as well as performing a re-design of a site as there are specific things that can be done to a site to class it as being optimised, for example a well designed site should have the phone number of the company in the top right hand corner and a navigation bar running along the top of the site. A website can also be classed as being optimised through the addition of a content management system.

Having your website optimised is recommended if you are hoping to reach the top spots within the search engines.
