Designing a Flyer 101

Katie Marcus

The flyer is one of the most traditional and well known advertising techniques. It has been used by businesses usually small businesses for decades. They continue to be used because they continue to bring in more customers.

But designing a good flyer is not as easy as it sounds. There are several components that go into it, and we are going to discuss some of them.

It Starts with the Headline Your flyer will not have any impact on its readers if it does not have a catchy sentence that pulls them in. That is not to say that your headline has to be earth shattering or mountain moving. It simply has to be something that will entice the reader to look more closely. Try to incorporate several aspects of your marketing strategy into your headline: what your company can do for your customers, why you are better than your competitors, things like that.

Build it Up With Color You should always go with a full color flyer printing project if you can afford it. Color adds a striking element to a flyer and instantly makes it more appealing. You can still succeed with a black and white flyer, but it is much more difficult. Color is not that expensive, and it is so much more effective.

Tell Your Customers Why If you get the readers attention with color and your headline, you then have to close the deal. The most important part of this is to tell the reader what you can do for him; how you can fill a need that he has. You also want to point out why you can fill that need better than any other company can. If you do this effectively, you will have a winning flyer.

Testimonials are Great The best advertisement is a customer testimonial. If you have room on your flyer, you should include a testimonial or two. Most customers will be more than happy to help you out by providing you with a few words about why they like your company. Just including one customer testimonial can have a tremendous impact on your flyers effectiveness.

Keep Some White Space Be careful not to completely fill up your flyer. I know its tempting, but doing so will only overwhelm your customers. Having nothing but color and text is not aesthetically pleasing; white space, by contrast, helps the eyes adjust to changing aspects of your flyer. Use white space as your friend. Do not be afraid to leave some areas of your flyer empty.

Take these tips to heart and use them the next time you design a flyer. Flyers are great advertising tools if you design them correctly and use the properly.
