Vote positive and kick out the negative
Mike Cosentino
Wherever you go, whatever you do you will always have a choice. There will always be the positive view and the negative view. Sometimes one point of view will be easier to adopt than the other. But in the long run, positive will always win out and be better for you. This may be easy to say but not so easy to put in practice when you are in a situation that has you frustrated, annoyed or depressed. Its in situations like this that you most need to emphasize the positive. So how can you systematically look for the positive in everyday life?
One simple tool to make and have with you wherever you go is a photo album filled with items or souvenirs that you automatically link with the positive. These items can be anything from tickets to a championship football match where your team won, the label off a bottle of excellent wine that you enjoyed recently, a letter of congratulation for your performance from your business unit manager, to photos of you and your kids having a whale of a time on a roller coaster.
Just make sure that the photo album that you select is small enough and compact enough to be able to fit comfortably with documents in a briefcase, or into storage space in a car. If you opt for one of the loose-leaf versions, then you can select pages and rotate them on a regular basis. By having this photo album handy, you can move into a super mindset that is strongly reinforced by your own personal experiences. To this will displace any negative feelings that you may be having at the time.
Its important to have this sort of tool available because you will be under constant attack by negative information and mindsets. Whenever you turn on the radio or the TV to listen to the news, you can be pretty sure that there will be some gloom. Its natural. The media is always looking for something to attract your attention, and it is an unfortunate aspect of human nature that other peoples misfortunes are always more interesting. So just remember that for any negative reports that might come your way, you can always find just as many positive affirmations and words of inspiration, if you look.
The company that you choose to keep will also have a direct bearing on your possibilities to accentuate the positive and kick out the negative. Stronger than books, newspapers and even the television, the attitude of your colleagues will influence you in ways that you may have not suspected. If your colleagues are overly negative or critical of the company that you work for, of products that your company makes or sells, think seriously about changing your group of professional acquaintances and perhaps even your employer. On the other hand, if your colleagues are positive and constructive in their discussions, then hang around and use their positive mindset as the psychological trampoline to get you bouncing higher and higher on your road to personal improvement as well.
