Exercise routine after Weight Loss Surgery

Laxman M

Suffers of severe morbid obesity could resort to weight loss surgery. Before resorting to such treatments, it is important to understand the procedure and consequences of such treatments. It is generally recommended only for people who are overweight by about 100 pounds and not recommended for teens and young adults.

There are a few types of weight loss surgeries that can be performed depending on the need of the patient. The most famous one is the Gastric Bypass Surgery (bariatric surgery). The process involves the tying up of the stomach so that the stomachs capacity is reduced. This results in reduction of the appetite and reduced urge to eat more. People who undergo this surgery eat half of what they usually eat. The rearrangement of stomach and intestines will reduce the calories the body can take in and absorb.

The more gentle form or surgery is Lap Band surgery. It involves placing a constricting band in close to the mouth of the tube that leads to the stomach. This reduces that food that can enter the stomach. Lap band surgery will take only 45 minutes and it does not require long hours or days of hospitalizations like the other methods and the recovery time is also quick.

Life after Surgery: Post surgery, the recovery time might differ depending on the kind of surgery that was performed. Gastric by pass can take a long time to heal (about 4 weeks). As soon as the surgery is complete, for a few days, the patient will be on liquid diets. After a week, a diet comprising of fresh fruits and vegetables could be advocated. Physicians recommendation should be taken for exercise routines. Normally, for the first week or so no exercise routine is recommended. Regular diet and exercise could be introduced after the sutures in the stomach heal completely.

It is normal for people to think that surgery is a one stop solution for weight loss problems, but it cannot be further from the truth. It is important to stick on to a regular exercise routine and proper diet that is recommended by the dietician. Junk foods high in calories and fat need to be avoided
