Are You A Quitter?

Denise Porter

I am a quitter from way back. My original dream and desire was to be a doctor. My entire family was in the medical field, I had lived around hospitals all my life, I was a very, very smart girl and I absolutely planned to grow up and become a Doctor (yes that is with a capital D, thank you very much).

What happened? For starters there were my Biology and Chemistry classes in High School dissect a cat? Yuck- kkyyyyy, no way was I going to ever do that again; then there was the discovery that I was way too sensitive to other peoples pain your back hurts where? So does mine, ouch!

Well at least I was a great writer and I got accepted to one of the best High Schools in the country (Hunter College High in Manhattan, NY), where I helped to start an underground paper and wrote a gossip column (Gossip Girl indeed) so I would become a journalist yes absolutely I would go to college and become a journalist.

Oh wait college costs money, my Mom was a single parent with 5 kids, somehow I missed all the info about financial aid and scholarships (look people Ive always lived in another as yet unidentified universe, just ask my kids).

The Marine Corps recruiter was well dressed and articulate so I somehow managed to become the first Hunter girl to ever join the military right out of school except for Stephanie F., but she attended West Point which is, technically, a college.

Give up on my dreams? At that point I had never even tried to achieve any of my dreams.

* Four racist/sexist years in the military made me realize that I wasnt going to retire from the military as I had planned * One abusive husband and two pregnancies destroyed the whole perfect marriage with 12 children idea * I did finally make it to college (I was depressed because I was 22 and realized that all my friends were graduating from college that year) but a failed relationship derailed my 4.0 GPA and it took me 7 years to get back to school and get my Bachelors degree.

Never fear, I did finally achieve some of my dreams, but did you find a common thread in my failures?

* I always quit right before some important breakthrough, with little research or information * I would give up because I didnt think that it would actually happen for me. * For example: One trip to the Guidance Counselors office would have put me in an Ivy League college with enough money for tuition and board. But I never took that walk down the hall, now did I?

Enough about me lets talk about you.

* Do you give up too quickly, too easily, no questions asked? * Do you ever wonder where a different choice at the fork in the road would have led you? * Let me ask you this: Are you ready for the success that the right choices could bring? * Do you truly believe that you deserve a successful career, a healthy relationship, a thinner you, or a fabulous lifestyle?

Before you can achieve any of these goals, you must first have financial freedom. I know what you are thinking; youre thinking Whats financial freedom got to do with anything? Its simple; you need money to achieve all the other stuff.

For example - its just about impossible to focus on a weight-loss goal when you are living paycheck to paycheck, or cant put gas in your car, or are 3 months behind on your mortgage.

In the following pages we will focus on how to attain financial freedom (maybe next time around Ill tell you ten secrets to losing weight and keeping it off).

Quitters never finish, not because they dont try, but simply because their belief system is too weak. What follows are ten tips to help you become a finisher, and ultimately a winner in this game we call life.
