Eating for Diabetes
Kathleen Whitlow
It is common knowledge that to uphold a healthy weight and a healthy lifestyle one must maintain a healthy diet. For those struggling with the diabetes disease, this is especially important. Making the right food choices can help you control your blood sugar, which is exactly what those with diabetes need. Taking good care of yourself and your diabetes all starts with knowing when, how much, and what to eat.
Planning out your meals and when to eat them can help diabetics stay on track. If you create a schedule for eating your meals and snacks and have them at a regular time on a daily basis then you will be able to navigate through your meal plan at a much easier pace. Your plan should fit in well with your daily routine according to your schedule on a daily basis. Not all diabetic patients need to follow a strict schedule when eating, but should stick to one that is regular. When factoring in things like medications that you may be taking for the disease or the need to lose weight you should follow your mealtime plan precisely so that your body can get used to it and benefit from the routine.
When consuming meals and snacks you always want to make sure that you have the right amount and that you don't over or under eat. This is especially true for those with diabetes. Depending on the size and weight of the patient who is suffering from the illness, whether or not they need to lose weight, and how much exercise they do will determine the amount of calories that they should consume each day. The caloric intake for someone that suffers from diabetes can range anywhere from 1200 calories per day to 2400 calories per day, all based on the factors that were mentioned previously. It is not only important for diabetics to keep track of the calories that they consume but to also measure the servings of the items that they are eating. When you have diabetes you must make sure that the servings that you are eating are the right size for you. There are companies that make measuring dishes and utensils of all types especially for diabetics. To make sure that you are having the proper portions you should use a food scale, measuring cups, measuring spoons, measuring plates, etc. There are also ways that you can "eye-ball" a measurement just by using your hand. For example, when having a serving of meat it should be no larger than the palm of your hand. Eating the right portions for your body can help to keep your blood glucose levels on track.
It is common sense that to lead a healthy life you must dine on the proper cuisine. This is no different when it comes to leading life as a diabetic. Making wise fare choices can help you to lose weight if necessary, feel good each day, keep your blood glucose levels in the objective range, and reduce youre the possible threat for other diseases, such as heart disease, that are associated with diabetes. Diabetics should ingest a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, healthy fats, carbohydrates, etc. They should closely follow the diabetes food pyramid that divides foods into groups based on how much you should consume of each type of food. Carbohydrates (starches) are the main type of food that diabetics should watch their intake of. Too much of this type of food can negatively affect the blood glucose levels. To make sure that all of the meals that you are consuming contain the correct amounts of certain foods it can also be a good idea for diabetics to work with a dietitian or nutritionist.
People that are suffering from diabetes need to dine around the same time each day, consume the proper portions for their bodies, and eat a variety of healthy foods, while also incorporating some sort of physical activity into their lives. If these guidelines are followed diabetics can lead a healthy, happy life.
