Pay As You Go Mobile Phones Why They Still Sell

Caroline Telford

The pay as you go mobile phone is a great alternative for someone who rarely uses their phone. It is a great way to avoid fees that usually come with owning a mobile phone, such as activation fees and fees for going over the allotted minutes for the month. Many people prefer the pre-paid mobile phone deals, as phones can oftentimes be cheaper this way. Another reason these pay as you go phones sell so well is due to the fact that no contracts are required, and the phones are much cheaper than the monthly plan phones.

The usual pricing for the pay as you go plans are similar to the pricing laid out in this article. The base fee for starting is just the price of the phone, plus the minutes that are purchased. Usually extra minutes can be purchased through cards or online. Typically it is better to purchase minutes in the larger blocks of time for the best value. The reason that many people like these phones is that if handled correctly, they can be much cheaper than the other kinds of mobile phone deals. Also, there is usually no credit check or contract, which is appealing for people who otherwise might not be able to get a phone due to bad credit or some other reason. Of course, these pre-paid plans are often used in movies and TV by criminals who need to stay away from the law, or by people running away from people trying to kill them.

Features that are usually included with the pay as you go phones are the same as most other phones. Texting, long distance calls, pictures, Internet, downloads, International calls, and more. Usually a fairly hefty fee applies when these services are used. Some features can be as expensive as 30 cents a minute, or 10 cents to send or receive messages. Picture messages can be around 25 cents a message which can be quite pricey if used more than occasionally. The phones that are offered with these mobile phone deals are usually the cheapest available, and can sometimes be made of poor quality. On the other hand, if someone doesn't need much in the way of a phone, then these mobile phone deals might be perfect for them.

Overall, the pay as you go phone is not the best option for most people. People who can benefit from it the most are people with few calling needs, or poor credit history. These two groups of people are the reason that these phone plans are still offered, and they work really well for those situations. Just be careful if you don't call much, as many purchased minutes expire within a few months, which would make it very expensive to own the phone because of the fact that you would have to replace minutes that have already been purchased but not used if you did not use them right away. There are better mobile phone deals out there, but most of them are more expensive.
