How to Come Up with Journal Writing Topics

Samantha Asher

When you begin writing in a journal, you do one of two things. One, you are very excited and you start writing write away. You feel like you couldnt get everything down in one sitting and that there is just so much to say. If you dont do this, then you do just the opposite. You are stuck. Youre lucky if you can get one line down. You sit there lost and stuck as to what to write.

If you are the first person and have no trouble writing, you are very lucky. Writers block is not fun, so if you can avoid it, thats great. If you have trouble coming up with something to write, this doesnt make you a bad writer. Writing is about both ideas and imagination, and how well you can actually write as far as correct grammar and a voice. Being stuck on an idea can be easily fixed. With a few backup ideas, you should be able to keep writing.

First try just writing about your day. What happened to you today? What did you do? Who did you meet? How are you feeling? Journal writing can be to discover yourself or practice your writing, and this practice will contribute to both. I find myself writing about my day almost everyday.

Next, you can also write about different ideas that come to you. As a writer, ideas are always flowing. Write them down as soon as they come to you. If you arent as concerned with being a good writer, but you want to write in journal for recreation or to discover who you are, I would still suggest writing down any ideas that come to you.

Both the day to day diary of your life and ideas that pop in your head are great starting points to start writing. If you want to spring beyond what you did today, take one thing that happened to you in the past week and expand upon it. What did it mean to you and what could it mean in your life?

If you are still stuck and need ideas, be creative. Open a magazine and take one article title. Write an article for that title that appeals to you. Listen to a conversation on the bus or in a store between people you dont know, and write a story about you. The possibilities when you are creative are endless.
