Beating Low Self Esteem

David McCarthy

People need to move out of the shadow of low self esteem if they are to start achieving in life the excellence that they are capable of. Low self esteem also has a negative effect on your private life too because it leads to you remaining quiet when you have something important to say. Worse still not being able to tell somebody important to you how much you like and admire them. Although criminality cannot be called an act committed by people with a low view of their own abilities it is true to say that our jails have a great number of such people among the inhabitants. It is fair to say that the more confidence you have in yourself the more your lifestyle will improve.

There are those people who break free of the prison of low self esteem. They actually realize their problem and confront it. However, after the climactic confrontation, many are left with the unanswerable question of what to do next.

People that confront their low self esteem often do so expecting things to change overnight. This approach is simply unrealistic: Imagine you are capable of running the 100 metres in 20 seconds and set your target to become an Olympic sprint champion in the next 12-months.

It is asking a little too much because Olympic sprinters take 10-years or more to get their times below 10 seconds. Returning to your own challenge; after 1-year you get your 100 metres time down to 18 seconds. Have you failed? Although it is true that you will not be selected for the Olympics with that time you have achieved a 10% reduction in your time in just 12-months. That is an astounding success

Maybe now you are starting to get the picture that people with low self esteem often ask too much of themselves and fail to give credit for all improvements. That is why it makes sense to follow activities like:

1) Arts and crafts - These activity is used in building self esteem simply because they allow you to let your creativity out. These activities help in building your belief in yourself because they allow you to explore your talents without prejudice. You see, this activity is not meant for you to compete. This activity is meant to show you that you can accomplish something and enjoy it.

2) Writing - Writing is actually considered by many to be the best way to express your inner feelings. Writing helps you believe in yourself by showing that there actually are people worse off than you. Try to write about other people, real or fictitious, and soon you will come to know that a vast number of people on our planet and an esteem problem.

3) Martial arts - These arts teach you discipline and control. They help in building self belief by showing you the true potential of every person. While it is true that some martial arts are competitive in nature, most martial arts out there are focused in character development. They use different forms in order to focus your mind.

Martial arts like jiu-jitsu teach that no person should be underestimated and that even the little guys have the potential to bring big men down. Most of all, they teach you that having low esteem is not a problem and that losing yourself in the way of the warrior is the best way to succeed.

Obviously there are many other activities that will help overcome low self esteem and the three above are no more than suggestions. The main thing to understand is that progress is made by a series of small steps - not one massive step.
