Renee Cassar, Australia's Singer/Songwriter Sweetheart
Melanie de Jonge
Renee Cassar's motto - as shown on her Myspace page is "No Music, No Life." You would think that the person who embraced such a passionate mantra had been studying and honing their musical craft since they were a small child, correct?
That's not how it was for Aussie Singer/Songwriter Renee Cassar. She grew up in pursuit of another talent, in fact - tennis. She played tennis competitively from a young age and was intensely focused on her athletic pursuits, making it such that other interests and passions fell by the wayside.
But, at 17 years old, she experienced a life-changing event. I am sure that anyone that listens to her music would agree it was a turn for the positive.
Renee was studying theater at school, and as you would guess, her goal was to act as part of the play that her school was putting on that year. There was a slight obstacle, though. It was Fame, which was a musical, and singing was something entirely new to Renee. However, she only had to sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" for the audition and so she decided to give it a shot. When the lead role of Carmen went to her, it must have been completely unexpected!
Although she did take some singing lessons between the audition and opening night by way of preparing for her big debut, she was still very green when she made her first appearance in front of an audience. To make matters worse, she had lost her voice due to all that intensive preparation! Nevertheless, she studied up on voice remedies and stowed some backstage, and she braved it out and sang her part. It was the start of a new life.
