Socializing Online Today
Fred Jones
Forum was a public space in the middle of a roman city where people socialize and talk and share information with others in the community. It has evolved over the years to city halls, books, leaflets, to radio and TV and now the forum has returned in the World Wide Web. With an easier medium to share and obtain information, people are utilizing this medium more and more each day; blogs, wikis, and other personal information websites such as facebooks and xangas. With the return of forums today, we can easily share information and even our opinion.
Forums today acts somewhat like the old roman forums, where people express opinions and information to the listeners, but it has evolved online. People can post, or write, their thoughts with a title and a list of relating title displays so that the readers can pick and chose what they want to read. People may post what is called a reply, where they share their thoughts on the topic and other people can read that as well. The forum today leaves less room for anything to be lost since everything gets recorded. But a forum might not be satisfactory for people searching for information since it is mostly opinion based instead of information. That is when personal websites come in to play.
Anyone can set up their own website expression themselves and/or providing information to others who might be searching for that subject. The ftp and domain prices went down dramatically compared to couple of years down so it is easier to get your own personal webpage with your own domain. There is almost infinite space on the World Wide Web, as big as your imagination allows it to be, so be creative with your website. And if you're not a professional webpage designer or even computer-lingo illiterate, it is okay, there are many other mediums to express yourself.
Big portal websites and other communities started to offer easy-to-make webpage using their easy-to-use publishing programs, so instead of writing html, you can browse, click and drag to design your own website. Other web communities offer a free blog space where you can write an online journal, your own newspaper, or even some place where others can mingle and add comments to respond to what you wrote in your post and express themselves.
Not only can we share our opinion, we can make a place of our own and make it act as our counterpart and socialize through it, or even have it socialize itself. A popular trend amongst these community websites is the friends list where you can add some of your friends or even someone you met through the online community as your friends list and you can display it on your site and remind you to regularly visit their website and leaving a comment or something. It's kind of like baking a pie and sharing it with your neighbor to socialize, but without the pie. But remember to walk away from your computer and bake a pie to socialize with your real life friends once in a while.
