Also, you need to know that pets never stay in one place for a long time. Usually pets have a favorite toy to play with, observe what kind of activity they will do playing with their toy. By merely observing their movements and actions, you can more familiar of their routine and anticipate what would be their next move. In this way you can have your camera ready and take a shot on the right timing in showing some signs to take pictures.

You can also try to set up a place where you want to take picture of your pet, but again observe what would be their reaction toward the place and the setting before taking picture. Know the movements that they usually do, if possible ask someone to assist you and make sure that your pet is comfortable with that person so they will be at eased playing with them. Borrow camera from a friend to take picture for a special occasion only. Or you can borrow camera that has burst shot so every move of your pet is captured and just select the good pet picture.
