Healthier Drinks for Your Kids
Joel Riley
In today's world, unhealthy drinks can be found everywhere you look. From sodas full of sugar and preservatives to fruit drinks that aren't really made of fruit, there are a lot of unhealthy choices for your children.
But it's critical that you make sure your child makes healthy choices in drinks. Not only do these unhealthy beverages lack vitamins that your child needs, they can also cause problems with growth and development.
Here are some basic essentials that are what your children need.
The human body requires a specific amount of water daily and most kids aren't getting it. Water is vitally important for maintain a well functioning body; this is what your kids need most.
What water lacks is taste and that's why so many kids don't drink it. If this is the case, try adding some flavor to it with some lemon slices. You can also serve it very cold or even slushy; this gives them something more than just plain water.
Don't be fooled by the so called flavored waters on the market; they may not have as many calories as other drinks, but they lack the essential vitamins your children need. Good ole tap water is till your best bet.
The preconception of allowing children to drink juices is that they will become overweight; this just isn't true. Even if they drink a lot of juice, studies indicate that they will not become overweight as adults.
While your child should get most of his hydration from water, it's okay to have a few servings of fruit juice every day. However, make sure that you're giving your child 100% juice. Many beverages claim to be fruit drinks, but have as little as 2% actual fruit juice and are filled with sugar and corn syrup instead.
Milk. Milk is another great beverage for growing children. Kids tend to like it and it's a great source of calcium and protein. Even flavored milks are a healthier alternative to soda.
