Mirrors - More Use Than Just Looking Into

dazza walker

When it comes to interior decorating mirrors are a designers best friend. Not only do the have a practical function but they also have the ability to make a small room look so much bigger and they also have the ability of making dull rooms look alot brighter by bouncing light around the room. Regardless of what room you are decorating and regardless of the theme and style of the room there is a mirror that will suit any style and brighten up that space you are designing.

Although it may sound strange, mirrors can also be used in homes just like pieces of art. Instead of hanging a picture you can hang a mirror with just the same striking frame and can still be the centrepiece of the room, but still reflect the light and enlarge the room which a painting could never do. In years gone by there was just a mirror you hung on the wall to look at and that was it, but now there are so many shapes and designs that they can be part of the theme of a room. You can have your traditional dining room with a standard rectangular mirror and old fashioned frame. Or you can have a contempory kitchen with a quirky weird shaped mirror with maybe frosted glass and a big metal frame so it still delivers its purpose but does not look out of place in the process.

Due to the fact that a mirror is simply reflective glass unlike a painting which can be so many different colours and backgrounds the most important part of choosing your mirror is the frame so to fit into the style of the room. A style that is becoming more popular and has a striking affect is having very big frames with the mirror insert being quite small in comparison. What this does is give a great centrepiece for the room without losing it's functionality. You can have your standard size mirror, but make the frame big and colourful to take up a big part of the wall. By doing this you can break up the colour scheme of a room and have a spectecular centre theme for the room to design around. Another advantage to this is that these sort of mirrors are not that expensive. If you were to buy a painting that size to design a room around it would be four or five times the price if not more.

You can use your imagination as much as you want. Instead of this one big centre piece of a mirror, why not use a number of small mirrors joined by a rod iron frame, which will be eye catching and beautiful, still have the desired affect of functionality and enlightening a room.

Spend a little time as to where you are going to hang your mirrors. What I mean is look at the proposed space from different angles to see what reflections will be capured. If done well you we catch lots of light to lighten up a room, or maybe you will be able to see that beautiful bed of plants growing in the garden. You certainly don't want to sit down and realise that, out of the corner of your eye, you see an ugly brick wall or your outside garbage can etc.

In conclusion mirrors are a cheap and fantastic way to lighten a room, make a room look bigger and by picking the right frame you can make a mirror the centre of attention in a room, and all on a budget.
