You only have control over three things in your life
Kelly Robbins
Jack Canfield tells us in The Success Principles that you only have control over three things in your life the thoughts you think, the images you visualize, and the actions you take (your behavior).
These three things and these three things alone, control your future and your success. Let's take a look at how each of them affects your copywriting career...
Your thoughts
Are your thoughts positive or do you constantly criticize yourself? Do your thoughts promote your winning the bid or do you make the pitch and then worry about all the things you said wrong? Do your thoughts bring you to places where you can attract your ideal client? Do you KNOW that you are successful right now, no matter where you're at in the game?
Pay attention to your internal voice. Are the conversations you have with yourself supportive or do you beat yourself up all the time? Are your conversations with yourself filled with doubt and worry or encouragement and love? It took me several years and a lot of work to not only become consciously aware of my internal dialogue, but to be constantly on the alert for non-supportive thoughts and beliefs and nip them in the bud.
The images you visualize
How do you see yourself when you are daydreaming driving the car or doing the dishes? Do you see yourself talking on the phone to a prospect and them hiring you without much effort? Do you see and feel the joy of a high balance in your bank account? Do you visualize telling your spouse how much money you made last month or do you practice how you are going to tell them you don't know how you're going to make the rent this month? Visualizations and affirmations play a huge role in achieving goals no matter what you do. From hitting the winning shot in golf to climbing new heights in the corporate ladder, visualizing yourself accomplishing your goal and winning is one of the things in your life you can control.
Visualization techniques have been successfully used by super successful people from movie stars like Jim Carrey to Olympic athletes. How can you use them to achieve a successful copywriting career? See yourself accepting the $10,000 deposit on the project. See yourself so busy you are outsourcing some of your copywriting jobs to friends. Visualize yourself two or three years from now in your dream home or living your ideal life. What do you see? How does it feel? Visualize these things rather than some of the negative things that easily pop into your head.
Your behavior
Your thoughts and visualizations are not enough to ensure success. It's imperative you take action steps to create change. Beyond reading books and thinking about what they want to happen, successful people hire mentors, make uncomfortable follow-up calls with prospects, attend those networking events, and do whatever else is necessary to make things happen. Successful people take the action steps necessary to make their positive thoughts and visualizations of success a reality. Taking action can't be done by anyone else you have to do it.
What action steps have you taken to reach your goals? What specific steps have you taken this week to achieve success? Was that action step big enough (be honest)?
