Hey Buddy - Need A Used Car?
Pat Morgan
Used cars are now an alternative for consumers who are caught up in the foreclosure disaster or the recessionary economy. Finding a good used auto is not really difficult currently as there are thousands of pre-owned cars all over the country. There are a substantial number of makes and models to select from, so being a buyer of a pre-owned auto will not limit your choices.
In reality, as these autos are 'used', it is imperative for a customer to understand some of the pitfalls of buying a used car so you get the best value for your money. Here's some tips to help you along the 'used car buying' path.
Look for the best deal you can make
Used car sales lots need you - more than you need them. With this in mind you should be able to hunt down the model of vehicle you really want and make a good deal to boot. Some of the better used car dealers will be offering promotions and specials because of the amount of inventory they are carrying. You might also be able to get some free services like tire changes or a years worth of car washes.
Don't take the first deal that comes along. You're not paying the full amount as you would with a brand new auto, but you still need to get a quality auto. After all, whether it is a brand new car or a pre-owned one, you'll be paying for quite some time. So you need to get the best value for your hard earned dollar.
Allow enough time to shop around
When you begin your search for your used car allow yourself enough time. You should be sure to visit many different auto lots and spend some time 'kicking the tires', as they say. You shouldn't be too hasty in picking out your car and then regret it a few months later.
If you think you're too hurried for time, you may just settle for something instead of getting the vehicle you really want. This could be fine if it's a brand new auto because there won't be any problem with wear and tear. But purchasing a pre-owned vehicle in a hurry can spell disaster in more ways than one, as you may also be compromising your safety and the safety of your family.
Learn the Lemon Laws of your state
Most state lemon laws cover new and used vehicles but you should check the policy of your state specifically for used cars. Should you discover that a used car has been sold to you under false pretenses, was falling apart after you bought it or several other conditions, you have certain legal rights as a customer under your states lemon laws.
Purchasing a used car from a relative or friend
Occasionally purchasing a used vehicle from a friend or relation can be a wonderful experience and save you money versus buying from a dealer that you are not too familiar with. You have less chance of ending up with a clunker in the long run as they may be selling out of necessity, not because the car is worn out. You may also be able to get a much better price from someone you know as they cut you some slack and be more willing to help you out.
Check with your friends to find out who they bought from
Another idea is to question your friends, co-workers or relatives that may have recently bought a used car, where they went and how they were treated. They can give you guidance and help you choose a quality used car. They can also refer you to a reputable used car dealer and maybe even the salesman they used. Then you will be sure of the quality and service you will receive.
Also, check with your work friends and neighbors as they will probably be more than willing to help you and offer advice. You've got eveything to gain and nothing to lose by getting as much knowledge as possible about buying a used car.
