Who is Likely to Be Struck by Panic Disorder?
Ricky Azzuri
If a person walking through the bushes encounters a venomous snake or any other wild animal, his/her normal move would be to scream and to run away from the beast as quickly as possible.
When these same feelings of panic and horror come to surface without any valid reasons and when they occur in a very secure environment (while walking on the street or watching a movie at the local cinema) you do not have to be an expert to conclude that something is wrong with your health. Experiencing a few of such episodes in a short period of time (a few days or weeks) could be a sign that the person suffers from panic disorder.
At the very early stages the victims become extremely frightened and confused. The non psychological symptoms of panic disorder that could include palpitations, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness, excessive sweating, jelly legs etc. make the victim to believe that something completely different is happening inside their bodies. Sufferers usually ask for help at the wrong places. They go to a whole range of different medical specialists undergoing numerous examinations because they are almost certain that the problem is with their heart, lungs, blood pressure and so on. The mental health expert is usually not on their list to visit.
While experiencing the panic attack patients might believe that they have some kind of the malignant condition, they are going to die on the spot, going insane or to lose control of themselves. Panic attack can occur every time when the victims find themselves in a specific environment or it can just happen without a visible cause regardless of the circumstances. A big number of patients suffering from panic disorder also develop agoraphobia (fright of wide-open or crowded places from which in a case of panic attack would be difficult to escape or to seek and receive assistance.)
Panic attacks can even occur while sleeping. Hot weather also plays a role in panic disorder because victims have more panic attacks during the warm summer months. The main reasons for this are that warm weather accelerates pulse, induces dizziness and dehydration. Also, during these months people are more likely to spend their time outdoors and therefore have a much higher prospect of running into unfamiliar and dreadful situations and places.
Although the real causes of panic disorder are unknown, some studies have concluded that certain groups of people are more likely to suffer of this condition than the rest. This group includes people who are timid by nature and who tend is to be worried and over concerned about every aspect of their lives. They continuously question their own abilities and are always unsure whether they are good enough to complete their tasks and responsibilities. The signs of their insecurity and fears are usually noticeable from their early childhood (blushing, sweaty palms, palpitations, not feeling comfortable in front of older, unknown people or in front of the authoritative figures.) Those kids spend a lot of time daydreaming and imagining things and possess no agonistic spirit and behavior. During their sleep they can also experience dreadful dreams and have accidents with bed wetting. Their perception of other people is sort of naive because they cannot estimate the hidden intentions of nasty people. Even after repetitive and numerous disappointments they do not change their act.
It is essential to state that panic disorder is very common mental health problem in our society. Although people that show some of the above mentioned symptoms in their childhood are in greater risk of developing panic disorder later on in their lives, not everyone will. On the other hand, some very strong people that are energetic and have no obvious problems in their lives can be hit by this disorder without any warnings or a logical explanation.
