Coloring Books Online

Jason Adams

The coloring book has been a mainstay of any child's development for almost a hundred years. I imagine that it goes even further though, as young cavemen and women playfully smeared berries and dyes on the wall to express their developing view of the world. Regardless of the history it is easy to understand that coloring is just something fun for children to do. It's simplistic art that gives a sense of accomplishment while tuning their motor skills and creativity. This old classic isn't tied down to a physical form though.

Coloring books have made the successful jump headlong into the Internet age. Boys and girls of any age can find a coloring format that is pleasing to them. These games are great alternatives that work on a number of levels. First of all, this little art project can be cleaned up with the click of a button and restarted ad nausea. Second, the will be able to develop their basic computer skills while still exercising their creativity. Finally, these are completely free options through a number of reputable online arcades.

Let's look at the easy aspect of it first. Their little hands will no longer have to hold onto their plethora of little crayons to etch out their artwork. They can just log onto a good arcade site and pick out a coloring game that they want to play. The interface is pretty simple and they should understand all of the options within a few minutes. This doesn't limit their creativity though. They can choose an easier route of section coloring that amounts to a paint by numbers, or they can use paintbrush options to color freely. It's not as much fun if you aren't able to color outside the lines every once in a while.

Another benefit is that it provides a simple way for younger children to have some Internet exposure in a fun environment. They'll learn some mouse control skills while also learning about online interfaces. Pretty good for a little game in an arcade. This is particularly true for many girls. The Internet is not always friendly to them.

Technology, especially games, tend to revolve around very macho activities. Gender stereotyping may not be good, but it is simple truth that many girls do not enjoy the base pleasure of blowing an alien's head off. An online coloring book is a simple and accessible way for many previously alienated young girls to get into the Internet.

Finally, they are a free. That's probably all I have to say. I guess I'll elaborate a little bit to avoid the dishonor of a two sentence paragraph. Childhood artwork has evolved into its own special economy. There are coloring books, full packs of crayons, crayon sharpeners, art stations, stencils, and of course the eventual shift to colored pencils. Most coloring books online are available for free while still allowing them to color in their favorite characters. They will usually even have options to print out the drawing for the fridge. Much cheaper overall.

Coloring books have been around for a long time. They aren't going to go away anytime soon either. The good news is that they've become more advanced to meet the new demands of the Internet era.
