Credit Cards for College Students

David Tang

If you are a college student, you probably get tons of junk mail with credit card offers and have been since high school. Maybe you even find people across campus giving away free stuff if you apply. Credit card companies love to offer credit cards to young adults. You are new to the real world, and you will potentially spend a lot of money, or so they think.

If you are a college student and you want to get a credit card but are worried about going into debt, stop worrying. The only way you will go into debt is if you don't pay your bill in full every month and can't control your spending. This is exactly how people get into debt. You might be thinking, "If millions of people have gotten into credit card debt and still are, how can it be that easy?" It's simple; they don't realize how simple it is, and they can't control their spending.

If you are in college, you may be tempted to just live it up, focus on school and partying, and worry about money later on. Trust me, you will be mad at yourself later on if you do this and end up putting yourself into thousands of dollars in debt on top of student loans. You may not realize it, but this can set you back years once you start working, even if you make a good starting salary.

If you are a college student and you want to use a credit card to gain cash back or other rewards that is not a bad idea. As long as you always pay the balance of your credit card every month, you can make out pretty good. For example, if you get a card with 3% cash back on all purchases and you spend about $1000 a month, you can get an extra $30 a month or have an instant 3% discount off of everything you buy.

As a college student, it is very likely that you have little to no credit. Luckily for you, there are credit cards out their designed specifically for college students. These cards aren't hard to get if you have no credit and they offer benefits ideal for college students. Some cards will offer cash back and others rewards point programs. If you are interested in applying for a credit card, limit yourself to one, and choose one that fits your needs best.
