Transaction Charges On Credit Cards

Alisdair Cosgrove

A consumer who uses a credit card from the USA in a foreign country will usually have to pay a two or three percent transaction fee. Not until lately did most credit card companies clearly disclose those fees in their terms and conditions.

There were many people who received notification of a class action lawsuit settlement earlier this year in regard to these fees.Credit card companies are required to clearly state foreign and international transaction charges on credit card applications, since the lawsuit has been settled.

You will most likely find that your credit card company charges three percent for all international transactions if you get in touch with their customer service. It can be very expensive on the purse to pay an extra three percent on every purchase, but these charges can be avoided.

Foreign currency exchange rates from your bank can be somewhat better than what you will get at a foreign currency exchange booth.

When a debit card is used as a credit card, there may be some risks, but ATM withdrawals are free of foreign transaction charges as a general rule. Better fraud protection can come from a credit card than from a debit card and this is a good reason to not use a debit card to make purchases abroad.

If some unscrupulous merchant overcharges you or uses you card fraudulently you can contest it and receive a refund. If, on the other hand, you debit card was fraudulently used, you will not only be faced with a depleted bank account, but it often takes a great deal longer to get your money returned.

The only way to pay no international transaction fees seems to be to use a credit card that does not charge these fees and with these no fee credit cards you get the security provided by a credit card without added expenses.

It is always great to know just how much you will be spending in your day to day life, but it is even better when you are vacationing; ATM fees are charged for each transaction. Most people do not have a very good idea of how much cash is required while traveling and unless you are the exception to this and have a precise budget figured out, it is difficult to withdraw the correct amount in one singlr transaction. You may at many times find it difficult to locate a cash machine in many foreign countries, but you must not take the chance to draw out an excessive amount of cash or you could be at risk for theft. You will find that you have to pay a fee to convert funds back to your local currency as well as the fees that were paid to convert to foreign currency.

Travelers checks are a safe alternative to cash but they are not accepted everywhere and there is a fee to purchase them.

Make sure you know what the terms and conditions are on a credit card you apply for thinking that it charges no additional fees for foreign purchases. If the card has a high rate of interest, be sure of the terms to know whether you can pay of the balance quickly so you will not have to pay extra fees of a different sort.
