Print Media Inside Households
Teeja
Print media has always been the number one source of news and information. Newspapers though slowly becoming obsolete are still favored by the baby boomers, even though there is ready information at the touch of your fingertips through the use of the internet. Magazines and tabloids are still selling like pancakes amongst women of all ages and races. Indeed, print media has a way of controlling the mentality of everyone who has access to it.
A majority of people who still buy from newsstands are mostly adults; thus companies promote a lot of adult driven content. The percentage of children and teens that have access to these printed materials is unknown, but it doesn't take a genius to make an estimate. Households that receive newspapers and magazine subscriptions provide their children with a lot of reading material; that may or may not be helpful in their growth.
Parents who bring home newspapers and encourage their children to be on top of current events should be applauded, as this gives the kids a chance to be exposed to what is happening in the country and across the globe. However, there are some content that children should not be privy to; especially the younger ones who do not really understand what economic crisis, house market crash and unemployment are all about. This will just provide them with something to keep them awake at night, wondering if they will be able to keep their homes or if their parents will still have a job in the morning. Creating panic amongst children may affect their overall emotional growth.
Magazines are a source of entertainment and information that is vital in the physical and emotional development of teens. But as parents, we should all be aware that some of the published materials are not appropriate for all ages. Teen mags, simply put, are for teenagers who would like to find out more about their favorite stars or read about something that they cannot speak about with their parents. These are generally safe reading.
On the other side of the fence, there are magazines that are only for adults. These include pornographic magazines with images not suitable for children. Pictures of naked porn stars, advertisements about their newest releases and even editorials about these so called actors should not be seen or read by children and young teens.
To be on the safe side, it would be a good idea not to bring home any material that could children can accidentally come across with. Our hiding places, though we think are safe, doesn't really spell out security for our children. One way of the other, these will be found especially by prying eyes. If it cannot be helped and you have to bring home these magazines with pictures of porn stars, keep them under lock and key.
The responsibility of publication does not go beyond relaying information and truth; the rest is up to the reader. Whether or not we choose to believe what is written, keep them for future reference or share them with our children; we must be responsible readers.
