Know How To Have A Good Support System
Kate Wilber
It isn't easy - being a work-at-home mom. Deadlines must be met, documents or spreadsheets must be edited, phone calls and emails from work must be attended to, work-related targets must be met, and that's just when it comes to work! The household is a completely different ball game, you have to do all the chores, take care of your husband's and kids' needs, and mostly ensure things run as efficiently and smoothly as possible. It won't do if your children refuse to cooperate, delay you, or if your husband's in a bad mood and prevents you from working. It's essential that you have a good support system to back you up.
Firstly, tell your children why, in the first place, you have a work-at-home job. While times are tough, the economy's also changing, therefore we could all do with a little extra money. Supplementing the family income is necessary - explain that to your kids, and that it will pay off, and make everyone's lives more comfortable. Your kids will be much more supportive once they realise the benefits of you working. Make sure they aren't neglected. Give them activities to keep themselves busy with - colouring books, building blocks, and jigsaw puzzles are just a few suggestions. Allow them to watch television, but not too much- mindless viewing retards cerebral development. Take the help of a baby-sitter if required, when the work pressure is high.
Secondly, ask your family to help you around the house. When you have a work-at-home job, you'll be tired from work, and you'll need your husband and your kids to help you with the chores. You could ask your hubby to boil the pasta, your older child to grate the cheese, and the younger child to lay out the vegetables. Once everyone realises the tasks to be done, and how they must be done, getting into the groove will be easy. It'll also be fun- we guarantee you. So not only are you getting help from the family, you are bonding with everyone!
Your kids will appreciate you more if you don't shout at them constantly for making noise when you're working. You must learn to adapt yourself to environments. Your sons might be playing a rather noisy game of basketball just outdoors, but so what? You should still be able to handle your work without losing your cool. If you can be with your children during work hours, even when they're playing or rough-housing, you will have wonderful support from them.
And this we can't stress enough - try to do things together, as a family. You all will appreciate each other all the more, and this will increase the strength of the support system. Finish off your pending work, take a little break from home and the household - enjoy some simple family travel - go for a small vacation- you, your husband, and the kids - somewhere peaceful and quiet, where you can recharge yourself, bond with your hubby, and spend time with your children. Go shopping together - ask your children;s help in selecting the girls' clothing and boys' clothing, and if you have a baby - the baby products. In each other's company, you will realise the joys of being part of a family all over again!
