Anchor Text will Get you to the front page
The purpose of Search Engine Optimization or SEO is to get free targeted traffic from the search engine that will convert to sales.
There are two types of SEO: The onpage SEO are things that you can change ON your webpage like Title tags,Header tags, Bolding, Italicizing, Underlining Alt image tags Meta Tags Etc. The main purpose of the onpage SEO is to make your web page easier to crawl for the search engine spiders that determines how your website will look and to be indexed.
Offpage search engine optimization are concerned with how many website are linking to you and how they're doing it. Regardless of all the attention to proper keyword density, the proper keyword prominence, the proper number of times you need to bold, italicize, or underline a keyword on your page, these things are NOT critical when ranking well for a given search term.
It is in properly planned OFFPAGE OPTIMIZATION that will get your website on the first page of Google. It's all about the links, links and more links. There are several things that I need to explain about these links.
Google don't care about the outgoing links as long as you don't link or exchange links with banned sites.
Google takes great interest in knowing how internet customers find your website and what keyword was used. Google wants to know if people enter your site through url hyperlink or if people are finding particular text links to click into your website.
Not all text links are the same either. Google would, instead of url link, would prefer to see text in the hyperlink and they would even prefer the text in the keyword format. This is called anchor text.
They consider the importance of your website by not only the number of overall incoming links but also the number of anchor links that are pointing to your site.
By now, I'm hoping you can see that it's the offpage search engine optimization factors that will get your website to the top of the search engines. Again, the onpage factors are things you SHOULD do, but are not nearly as important as the offpage factors.
To prove this point, I will show you a website with a high Page Rank with massive backlinks. This example illustrate is that onpage optimization factor is not as critical when it comes to trying to rank well for a search term. It is the offpage optimization that will increase your rankings in the search engines; specifically Google, Yahoo, and MSN.
If you go to Google for the search term "click here", you'll notice that the #1 ranked website is adobe.com. The creator of Adobe Acrobat Reader should show high on search terms like:
graphic design programs create printable documents web design programs
Further analysis of their website shows something very interesting.
1. The word "click here" isn't in the page title.
2. The word "click here" isn't in the URL of the website.
3. The word "click here" isn't even in the description listed by Google!
4. The words "click here" aren't even mentioned on the webpage, anywhere!
Then why exactly does adobe.com rank #1 on Google for the term "click here", a search terms that they made no attempt to optimize in? It's because of their links!
Who is linking to them AND how many of them websites are linking as well as how they're linking to Adobe.com! With my SEO software, I can see that the text link that is used most often is ...
"Click here" as in to download Adobe Acrobat Reader. Click here is the anchor text in the example above.
The main two reasons that adobe.com is ranked #1 for the keyword "click here" is because:
1.) The websites linking to adobe.com are very quality sites (have a high Page Rank)
2) The websites linking to adobe.com used the keywords "click" and "here" many times in the anchor text of the links linking to adobe.com
So, make sure to make all of your incoming links count by using anchor text instead of url or some other text links. Read my article on why I am totally against reciprocal link exchanges and why I recommend a particular service when it comes to getting one way text links as the quickest way to improve your page ranking.
