Now back to why you should be booking your seats for Speed the Plow, David Mamets play about Hollywood and its sheer translucency. This play first opened at the Lincoln Center Theater in 1988, and now twenty years later has opened again at the Ethel Barrymore Theater in New York. The original cast consisted of Joe Montegna, Ron Silver and the gorgeous Madonna. This time around, Neil Pepe has casted Jeremy Piven, Raul Esparza and Elisabeth Moss as the central characters of Bobby Gould, Charlie Fox and Karen. The set for the play has been designed by Scott Pask, and the lighting has been done by Brian Mac Devitt. The set and all that lighting however, seem pale in contrast to the central attraction of the play, which is pure talk. Yes, there are no fancy movements; all the play is about is clever words. The dialogues are so powerful, they cast an instant spell on the audience. The characters speak unabashedly, and fire insults without a pause. It is a treat to watch such intellectually stimulating talk, although it is a bit sarcastic and playful at times.
The story revolves around Charlie Fox bringing a script to his longtime friend Bobby Gould, who is now a producer of a movie house. Bobby instantly likes the idea of making the movie, which has an appealing star cast. They even call the writer, whose book lays on Bobbys table an Eastern sissy writer. They discuss this for a long time until Karen, his secretary for the day walks in. Bobby hands her a book on God, Radiation and Death, and later that night, he is rather impressed by her review on it. The next morning he decides to make a movie on radiation rather than do Charlies project. This really upsets Charlie who accuses Karen of using sex as a weapon to make it big in Hollywood.
The direction of the play is superb and even the performances by each of the characters is amazing. The term Speed The Plow has been taken from the phrase Industry brings wealth, God speed the plow.
