How To Ride A Unicycle

Lee MacRae

Have you ever wanted to ride a unicycle? Have you wondered why people do? Well, the first and most important reason is simply because it's fun. It's neat being up on one wheel and in control. Another good reason is the exercise. You are always pedaling a unicycle, so riding is a good workout. Riding is a low-impact activity, so it is good for people with legs wrecked by jogging. So the next question you ask is, how do you learn to ride a unicycle?

Well, there are a few steps you can follow in learning to ride the amazing unicycle:

1. Get two friends to work with you. They can stand on either side of you and then you get up on the unicycle with your arms around their shoulders while they hold your steady.

2. Be sure to sit up straight; keep your eyes looking straight ahead; keep your weight on the seat, not on pedals. Rock the pedals to get a sense of balance. Get the pedals level; this is when you are in control of the unicycle.

3. To start, pedal half turns then stop. Then peddle full turns, then stop. Then peddle two turns, etc. Doing multiples of half turns (from pedals level to pedals level again) is harder than continuously pedaling, but keeps you in control and helps to develop your balance.

4. After you feel a little more comfortable, switch to holding on to your friends' wrists. Go through step three again to gain more confidence in the ability to control the unicycle.

5. Again, after you feel a bit more comfortable, now switch to holding on to only one friend's wrist and go through step three again.

6. After some more practice go off and use a wall instead of your one friend. Another great mechanical aid to learning at this step is to find a long railing of suitable height to practice alongside. A ramp way or a bridge often has a long railing that you can hold on to. Note here that if you can't find a wall and a flat surface to ride on then continue with one friend, but let go as much as you can to balance on your own.

Most people who have previously been able to ride a bicycle only take about an hour or so to learn to ride a unicycle. Don't be discouraged if you take longer or if you tire out quickly. Break your practice sessions up into 10 minute periods and you will succeed just as easily as you learned to ride a bicycle.

Once you learn to ride a unicycle you may want to engage in a hobby many young people take part in today - extreme unicycle! Yes it seems everything is extreme today in the unicycle is no different. Take a look at YouTube and you can see a lot of extreme or mountain unicycling going on.

Whatever your reason for wanting to learn to ride a unicycle, it definitely is a lot of fun. Many people today do it for their own extreme pleasure or to delight their family and friends with the newfound skill. Happy unicycling!
