Chronic Alcoholism can be defined as a disease or an addiction which makes a person to crave for alcohol and to drink continuously regardless of the unrelenting occurrence of alcohol related problems. The person having chronic alcoholism problem is labeled as “Alcoholic”. Craving, impaired control, physical ailments, and tolerance are the four notable symptoms that can be seen in an alcoholic.
An alcoholic goes through three stages to finally reach the chronic alcoholism level. There is one misconception among people that lesser level drinking problems are not the serious ones. However, they can also be life threatening too.
The first stage is known as binge drinking problem. A person who has this type of problem takes five or more drinks in one session or keeps drinking until he gets drunk. This problem is more common among the teenagers.
A person enters the second stage when his drinking habit starts to cause problems. However, that person keeps drinking though he faces non-stop social, interpersonal or legal problems. This stage is known as alcohol abuse. At this stage, that person loses his ability to perform any responsibility at his work place.
That person becomes alcoholic when he enters the final stage known as alcohol dependence. At this stage, he craves for alcohol, drinks beyond limit, exhibits withdrawal symptoms if he does not drink, and increases the intake of alcohol to feel the effect. Thus, this stage is also known as chronic alcoholism. This stage is more deadly since he becomes vulnerable to life threatening diseases like heart disease, cirrhosis of the liver, cancer, pancreatitis, and alcoholic dementia etc.
Since this stage can subject an alcoholic person to physical, mental and social sufferings, the reputed research organizations have come up with the cure for chronic alcoholism. However, the success of the treatment always depends on the alcoholic person. When he really wants to stop drinking and accepts the help without any doubt, he will get cured from chronic alcoholism disease by the treatment very soon.
Nothing can be much better when an alcoholic person begins the curing process by consulting his family doctor. However, he must be open and honest while answering to the doctor’s inquiries. Then the doctor will assess the gravity of his problem and accordingly continue the curing process.
The treatment normally consists of different phases like detoxification, medication under doctor’s supervision, and individual or group counseling. While attending the counseling, he will learn to identify the circumstances and feelings that force him to drink. Then he will be able to find the methods to counter them.
There is one important thing which must not be neglected during the treatment of chronic alcoholism. It is the involvement and support of his family members and friends. The reason is very simple. In the situation like this, moral support may influence the outcome of the treatment.
