Understanding your pet when they are ill

Chewie

As a pet lover, we all fear for our pets especially when they are will because we know they cannot tell us and we cannot tell whether they are ill or not. As mothers to our kids, we feel the same, our fear is when as a baby , they cannot tell us that they are sick. So, we have to observe their character everyday.

The same goes to our pets. But for our kids, someday when they learn to talk, this fear of not being able to tell us is gone. Unlike our pets, until the day they leave us, they will not be able to tell. Therefore, in this article I like to share with you on how to know whether your cat is having a cold and what you should do. Cats are cute, adorable and lovable. But like all other pets, you as the owner or pet lover should know how to recognize if your pet is ill.

Can your cat catch a cold? Of course, they can. But they will not catch it from you and you cannot catch it from your cat too. Their cold is quite similar to our human cold except theirs are caused by various bacteria and viruses.

The symptoms of a cat’s cold are sneezing, coughing, running nose; they even have discharge from their nose and have trouble breathing. The various methods to help your cat to be relieve from this cold is first, take your cat to the vet. Whether it is minor or major, do not assume that it is nothing. Cat’s cold is also called an upper respiratory infection and many upper respiratory infections in cats are actually caused by more serious illnesses. Their cold may appear like a small matter but it can turn out to be the worse. During this period where your cat’s immune system is low, a secondary infection makes attack your cat.

What you should do when you suspect your cat is about to catch a cold, wrap your cat with blanket, keep it warm and keep it indoors. If there are other cats in your house, it is advisable to separate them. Cat’s cold is very contagious. Give your cat lots of water and plenty of food. Your vet will normally give your cat antibiotics for its cold therefore makes sure your cat takes them and complete the antibiotics.

Besides being aware of your cat catching a cold, as a cat lover or owner, you should also know how to prevent your cat from catching a cold. Couple of things you should not ignore is your cat’s rear end…. Most pet owners, they do not make it a habit to check their pet’s bottom and that is an important area to look. Feces get trapped for the longhair cats especially around the anus and this can cause an obstruction. Get your groomer to keep this area short. On either side of the anus are two anal glands, these glands produce a smell that is normally expressed when your cat has a bowel movement. These glands can become painfully blocked and infected. Recognize the sign of this infection. Whenever your cat scoots, this is the giveaway.

You veterinarian will be able to keep these sacs empty and your pet’s rear end is a place to attract parasites as well. It is the favorite spot for the fleas, bacteria to stay. The nicest, cutest pets can get this. Look out for signs like tapeworm infection, small white worms that look like grains of rice or cucumber seeds.
