Undercover Bed Covers -- Secret Ways Superior

Al Bullington

Undercover Bed Covers are lighter than fiberglass truck bed covers. Now they look like a fiberglass cover, but there's not an ounce of fiberglass in one of these covers. There's the trick to their advantages. See, these covers are made of modern polymers that are lighter, stronger and less bulky than fiberglass covers. Here's what that does for you.

Hard bed covers of fiberglass weigh so much that they can cost you extra gas just to haul around. That's not what you want. You really want the more modern materials in your bed cover. You are looking at only around 60 pounds for a full size truck cover. Compare that to real fiberglass. I think you will be amazed. So watch out that you're not buying old technology that will cost you money. Extra weight costs you in other ways too.

Let's face it, a hinge forward truck cover is a bulky thing to install. The lighter the cover, the easier time you'll have getting it in place. I don't know if you've thought of this, but you may want to take your hard cover off sometimes. That's because the lid will not close with cargo taller than the pickup bed sides. Hauling tall cargo is a lot easier with the cover removed. With a heavy cover, you're in for trouble every time you take the cover off. It's a pain. There's more too.

See, fiberglass is bulky and thick. That's just the nature of the material. That means a more modern cover isn't as thick. So what? Well that means the old cover either sticks up higher OR takes up more room in the bed. Fiberglass builds a thicker more bulky lid, no way around it. In either case, that's no good. Then there's lifting it.

Now granted, lifting a truck bed lid is accomplished using lift cylinders. Here's the deal though. Fiberglass covers can be so heavy, they wear out cylinders. The lighter the cover, the longer the assist cylinders should last and the easier the lid is to handle.

With all that you may think the lighter covers will be more fragile and easily damaged. That really is not the case. The newer materials are all but bullet-proof and more. See fiberglass is also prone to cracking. Not so with the polymer materials. It's not prone to crack and is more impact resistant too.

It seems like a minor detail, but the material used to manufacture Undercover bed covers does big things. Compared to a fiberglass bed cover, you get less weight, more strength and less bulk. It's a good deal for you.
