No More Big New Year’s Resolution; Time to Go for Small but Attainable Actions

Robert Johnston

The New Year is the time for new changes as well as the perennial new resolutions. Always, it’s the time of the year that everyone starts to make their New Year’s resolution to bring improvements in one or more areas of each one’s life.

From going on a diet to working harder this year and even having the most effective postcard printing for your business for example, resolutions are many and varied. But do you know that according to statistics, people only follow their resolutions until the second month? So this means that by February, most people often forget or would have broken more than 90% of the resolutions they made at the beginning of the year.

Why? Because of procrastination, lack of discipline and lack of a game plan – these are the main reasons why people often fall back on their New Year’s resolutions.

This is why it is better to stop setting yourself up for failure for the New Year; and instead, change your behavior so you’ll be able to make big improvements in your life. The three reasons we mentioned are actually behavioral in nature. Rather than list down a long list of resolutions and getting disappointed because you lack the proper behavior to go through with it, why not instead begin the improvements by tackling do-able and easy-to-finish activities that will eventually lead you to achieving those big goals you’ve set up for you and your business. Look at changing your behavior first before trying to create those big resolutions and goals for your business.

It all starts by having smaller pieces of your goal that are attainable and realistic. Even the biggest objectives are surmountable if you break them down to smaller and do-able sections.

For example, rather than looking at committing to make 300 new leads this year, you can devote 30 minutes of your time every week to network and reach out to 5 new people. Introduce yourself or have your customers give you a referral. At the end of the month you only spent 2 hours making 20 new contacts. When you do this every day for 12 months, you would’ve made 240 new connections at the very least.

This is what it means by going at it in bite-size pieces: by taking small do-able steps, you will be able to eliminate not only the bad behaviors that often retract you from achieving your goals; but it will also help you do more and achieve more results with the big goals you set up for your business.
