A Little Look At Dove

Deirdre Gonzalez

One of the most unique brands of soaps today in the Philippine market is Dove. Dove is a type of soap like no other. This is because the soap is not just an ordinary soap used in the shower, but a beauty soap that helps in nurturing our skins with its special formulation. According to dove philippines, the Dove soap is more like a skin care product like Pond's Cream in soap form. It is known to smoothen its users skin, making it softer and silkier. But other than its uses, what else do we know about Dove and its special formulation?

A Little Look At Dove Dove was first launched in the US in 1957 under Unilever. However, before it was introduced in the US, Dove was already a very popular brand of soap in The Netherlands which is produced by soap factory De Duif which in Dutch means The Dove, from which the English brand name Dove is derived.

Under Unilever, the company positioned the brand not just any other brands of soap, but as as a "beauty bar" with one-fourth cleansing cream. According to dove philippines, Unilever stressed that Dove's main purpose is to moisturize the skin while washing which is in contrast to the usual drying effects of regular soaps. One particular advertisement that says that Dove is different from soaps is by showing the cream being poured into the beauty bar.

To further reinforce the message, Unilever changed Dove's slogan in 1979, in which the phrase "cleansing cream" was replaced with "moisturizer cream". In 1979, a Pennsylvania dermatologist showed that Dove dried and irritated skin significantly less than ordinary soaps. As a result of this study, Unilever started aggressive marketing and won more than 24% of the market by 2003.

Dove of Today Dove products are manufactured in the Netherlands, United States, Germany, Ireland and Brazil. The Dove trademark and brand name is currently owned by Unilever. According to Unilever, Dove is formulated to be pH neutral, with a pH that is usually between 6.5 and 7.5, a level similar to water. In the US, Dove bar soap is currently produced in the cool moisture, exfoliating, sensitive skin unscented, nutrium nourishing, white, pink, calming night, pro-age, and energy glow versions.

Successful Marketing Campaigns of Today One of the most popular marketing campaigns of Dove was in 2006 when all agencies of Dove across the world, such as dove philippines, have started the Dove Self-Esteem Fund. It purports to be "an agent of change to educate and inspire girls on a wider definition of beauty and to make them feel more confident about themselves".
