Citizenship Test Study Guide

Richard Rash

To Be or Not to Be…..An American Citizen

By Timothy Wong, Immigration Attorney

For most immigrants this is not a deep Shakespearian philosophical question, not a matter of do I want to become a citizen or not. It is a question of CAN I become a citizen? Can I pass the USCIS citizenship interview and exam?

A lot of people come to me wanting to know a way around this interview and exam process. Some have already failed two times and lost their $675.00 filing fee for applying for citizenship. Others just don’t believe they can do it. I tell them all the same thing: unless you have a mental disability that prevents you from learning, then you must take the US citizenship exam. Even if you do have a mental impairment that prevents you from learning, this must be documented by a medical doctor or psychiatrist. Even then the USCIS will review and scrutinize these applications and over half will be rejected.

Then the excuses begin: my English is no good, I’m too old, I never went to school in my home country or here in the US, I’m often sick, I have six children and no time to study, I work 3 jobs to support my family. I sympathize with the people who come to see me with these problems. I really do understand what they are going through-I watched my parents go through the same thing. But I tell them all the same thing: I don’t make the rules, the USCIS does and there is no way around taking the citizenship exam.

They usually leave my office mad and frustrated, not getting the answer they were looking for but most return after a few days or weeks. Their next question is how can I pass this interview? Again, same answer for everyone-find a citizenship class in your area and attend, attend every class and study at home. Study, study, study! I usually get replies such as I don’t have time to go to school or there are no classes in my area. Then I tell them to get yourself some good study materials and get to work. I advise them to find one study guide that has everything you need. Don’t piece it together with this book, that CD, that website. Find ONE citizenship study guide that has everything and study it until you know it in your sleep.

My clients usually ask me for advice on which study guide to use. I had two or three that I liked but they were not updated for the new citizenship exam. Now the only one I recommend is Passing the US Citizenship Exam: Yes, You Can Do It. It was created by an expierience citizenship teacher and has everything you need to pass the interview. It is also good for people at any level of English, from beginning to advanced. It is carefully laid out to cover every area of the citizenship exam. You can tell this guy has years of expierience teaching this subject. I have received many thanks from clients who used this study guide.

Best way to find it is at his website: citizenshipcd.com You can download the book and CDs or order a hard copy. Price is great and material is outstanding.

Order this book and 2 CD set, study over and over and you will pass your citizenship interview. I promise!
