Men's Sunglasses Trends 2010

kate whitely

It's hard to believe that spring and summer are just round the corner when winter is still lingering outside your window, but in only a matter of weeks the days will be longer, the nights will recede and the sun will once again have us wondering what to wear to look cool.

For fans of designer sunglasses, 2010 promises some twists, but don't expect any radical departures from form. Most designer labels treat their looks like we do our signatures: the underlying shape stays the same, but all the little flourishes change from time to time.

The key to style has always been versatility, and for a go-anywhere look this summer, there'll be plenty to recommend the timeless class of Rayban. As a brand they've established the recognition of a Coke or McDonald's both here and around the world, and the Wayfarer is the epitome of the Rayban magic. Clubmasters, which had a much-hyped comeback last year, still stand to retain their popularity, too.

The 2113s bring Harvey Keitel in Reservoir Dogs to mind, a look that will definitely get you noticed (but hopefully not by the police). The polarized lenses are a feature you should be seeing plenty of this year as more and more folks get wise to the benefits.

They were once considered a specialty lens for fishermen, skiers and other sportsmen, but polarized lenses are now becoming popular with everyone for their great benefits, like greater visual clarity, greater depth, reduction of glare and better color perception. Polarized lenses are great for driving, so consider them as an option for whatever style you settle on.

To prove they like variations of a theme, here are the Rayban 2143s with transparent frames and accented black tops. They show a willingness to add new twists to the Rayban cocktail while holding true to the original vision. In these belt-tightening times, and with prices that will please even a modest budget there's no reason not to give Rayban a look.

Whatever the financial weather, super rich celebrities will carry on regardless, but one way everyone can look as cool as these beacons of style is with designer sunglasses. That aloof anonymity factor that a pair of dark shades brings is appealing to the rock star in us all.

Dior has to be near the top of this summer's shopping list. The prominent white temple arm stripe of the D28Y1s adds a welcome accent to 'Roy Orbison' style familiarity that holds the attention and doesn't have to beg for approval. It just looks cool. And Dior's take on aviators, the By Dior 2 model is probably the best variation on a theme yet sculpted by this house. These pieces are a double take just primed and waiting to happen.

If the items on show at the catwalks of Milan, New York and Paris can be seen as a statement of intent, then this year could be very interesting for Prada fans. Prada has never been afraid to experiment. Their designs span the entire range, from the traditional to the flamboyant.

The Prada SPS52G sunglass represents the more conservative approach. Classic wire framed aviators with only the thick white temple arms and red detailing to set them apart from the herd. Then at the other extreme we find the SPR56H which could easily fit the bill for the lead singer of a U2 cover band, or even Bono himself. This sleek and bold design looks like it owes as much to wind tunnel testing as to artistry.

Whatever look you choose to suit your needs, 2010 is looking to be an exciting year for designer sunglasses.
