Centenarians Celebrate Birthdays With Bingo

It is no secret that bingo enjoys immense popularity in the UK. Internet bingo now rivals poker as the most popular online game in Britain. The UK is responsible for adding 80 and 90 ball bingo to the traditional 75 ball game. In villages and hamlets across the UK bingo halls are a valuable source for entertainment and social interaction, especially for pensioners. Recently land based bingo halls have fallen on hard times while internet bingo is thriving. Most blame the smoking ban and the double taxation of bingo halls.

Many of these bingo halls boast of long term loyal players. Sid Unthank, a retired bookmaker, celebrated his 100th birthday with bingo dauber in hand. Mr. Unthank ran a betting shop in Middlesbrough until he was 80. He has been playing bingo for 10 years and said his biggest win was a £750 jackpot.($1,109 USD) He said his longevity was due to ' drop of the hard stuff at night' and never being married.

Anne Webster of Shipley celebrated her 102nd birthday at her local bingo hall. Mrs. Shipley never misses a weekday bingo game and her 102nd birthday was no exception. Mrs. Webster plays bingo five or six days a week and is a familiar sight at her local bingo hall. The staff at her local bingo hall pulled out all the stops to celebrate Mrs. Websts birthday. They sent a limousine to her home to pick her up and presented her with a birthday cake shaped like a bingo card and champagne. Mrs. Webster had no comment about the causes of her remarkable longevity.

A recent report released in the UK says that playing bingo, including the online version of the game, helps seniors to remain mentally alert and avoid Alzheimer's disease. Bingo requires quick mental reflexes and experts say that the mental exercise offered by bingo is highly beneficial for older players. In recent years many seniors have become tech savvy and are playing bingo online. Bingo sites are welcoming these new players with a wide variety of player perks. Player perks include bingo bonuses and some pretty large jackpots. Internet bingo has become quite popular among pensioners and it is easy to see why.

It has been established that playing bingo is beneficial and helps maintain mental alertness. Internet bingo has also been credited with training the memory and helping senior citizens maintain mental alertness. We wish both these remarkable people the best.
