jessica thomson

Rewards and recognition play an important role in employee satisfaction. If you have employees under you then recognition awards will help you in influencing motivation and retention among your employees.

These awards further result in performance management. It helps to create a workplace environ which develops a positive and healthy spirit of competition among the employees thereby leading to achieving the necessary business results and goals.

When we talk about rewards and recognition, you should know that there is a difference in the effect that both create. While a reward is about rewarding the results, recognition means agreeing with the behaviour or the result and reinforcing the same.

Rewards and recognition can be a part of both formal and informal programs. When we talk about formal rewards and recognition, it generally means being a part of some predetermined program. On the other hand, informal rewards and recognition means spontaneous recognition or reward for something important.

Now, these awards and recognition cannot be conferred on anyone for any reason. There are certain criteria that need to be followed for the reward program and to maintain employee satisfaction. These important criteria are:

· When rewarding an employee, match it to the personnel. · Also ensure that it matches the achievement. · Always be timely and specific about the rewards.

In order to maintain performance management there are few criteria that you need to consider when rewarding a person. These are:

· Ensure that the reward system that you follow has a positive impact on the behaviour of the employee. For instance: · Give the recognition and award for achieving the desired performance rather than just for doing the required task. · It should be valuable to the concerned individual. · The reward should be based on obtainable goals. · The award should be open to all.

· Reward should focus on the efforts that have been used towards serving the customer. · These rewards and recognition programs should result in enhancing collaboration.

Now, there are various ways through which you can make the reward program effective. You can, in fact, motivate an employee to a great extent by rewarding in the following way:

· As a manager, you can personally congratulate your employee for doing a good job. · You can also write personal notes for the employee who has done well. · Always ensure that you use performance as the base for rewarding and recognising an employee. · As a manager, use morale building meetings to reward and recognise an achievement.

You can base these rewards and recognition for your employees by linking it to the goals of the organisation. Along the way, make it a point to define the mechanics and parameters and also try and gather the support and commitment of your staff.

The above mentioned points, if followed can help you develop a positive and competitive spirit among your employees which in turn will motivate them to do well. Thus, your employee's will strive hard to reach the desired goal.
