Add Color, Creature Comfort And Class With Carpet

Martha Mountjoy

Ask any home renovator and they will tell you that, when it comes to decorating, one of the hardest decisions to make is choosing what carpet to lay. Many people don’t realize how important carpet is to the overall appearance of their house.

After all, our floors are large spaces that visually dominate a room in much the same way a painted wall does. In fact we should think of our floors as the fifth wall that connects all other design elements in the room. Unlike our walls and ceilings however, carpets are walked upon. Because we are constantly tracking backward and forward across our carpets, they can naturally become soiled and unsightly. Selecting a high quality and attractive carpet that stands up to wear and tear is very important to maintaining the overall look of your home.

Choosing the right carpet for your needs can be difficult. There are so many things to think about! Amongst other things you need to consider the material, style, design and color. It’s enough to give the most enthusiastic home decorator get a headache!

Going though each element of the carpet (ie. fiber, construction, color etc) is a good approach.

To select the optimal fiber for your needs, think carefully about how you live in each room, and what amount of usage the carpet is likely to receive. For heavy traffic areas, or if you have children or pets, consider opting for a nylon since it is the most durable and stain resistant carpet fiber available. Polyester is a good carpet for normal levels of traffic, and has the added benefit of being very luxurious and soft.

That said, don’t expect it to stand up to quite the same amount of wear as nylon. Wool is another very popular choice. It has the advantage of being a natural fabric but it is not as stain resistant as its peers.

The construction of your carpet can range from tufted to twisted. Investing in a well made carpet ensures its longevity, so don’t be tempted to skimp on a cheaper carpet that is poorly made because it won’t stand up to the test of time.

There is little doubt that choosing a carpet can be overwhelming, but you can simplify the process by thinking about your style, lifestyle and budget. Choose wisely and you will lay a carpet that enhances the overall appearance of your home, and see you through years of use.
