Home Drug Tests - Separating Fact from Fiction
Mason Duchatschek
Practically speaking, there's not much separating one person who doesn't know how to read from another who chooses not to. When parenting, there's not much difference between those parents who can't see signs of drug use and others who choose not to look.
It's not uncommon for good kids to make poor choices about using drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Some find themselves out of school, in jail, or worse. Their parents look back with regret wondering what went wrong and what they could have done to prevent it.
Many teens think that their parents are easily duped and don't know what's going on. They doubt their mischief will ever be discovered and don't feel the parental bond of trust is ever in jeopardy. With little fear of being caught, teens essentially feel like they can do what they want.
The more convinced parents are that their teens would never try drugs, the harder it is for them to see the symptoms of drug use and the easier it is for their kids to get away with it. If teens don't suspect their parents are paying attention, they have little fear of getting caught or being held responsible for their actions.
Because the reverse is also true, there has been a dramatic increase in the popularity of home drug tests. Home drug tests provide immediate results for a fraction of the cost of a lab. Privacy is protected and accuracy isn't compromised for parents who are willing to administer them as part of a regular home drug testing program.
Since the topic of home drug testing can be a delicate one and may damage a relationship if not handled properly, counselors stress the importance of parents and teens reaching a comfortable middle ground. Parents should communicate their drug free expectations up front and establish a predetermined system of rewards as well as consequences tied to results of home drug tests.
For those who are willing to read, the signs are there. For those who aren't, the consequences may soon follow and may be grave.
