Famous Movies Set on an Airplane

Elisa Vuelo

Throughout the years there have been numerous movies that have been set in part or for almost the entirety of the movie on an airplane. While most of us look for flights that provide as little action and anxiety as possible, when it comes to movies set on airplanes, you’ll rarely find a calm flight. Action in the air makes for plenty of excitement in movies and can make us just a little more thankful when our flights touch down on solid ground again without having to have suffered through a deadly snake encounter or a flight full of convicts on board with us.

Airplane This is one of those movies that might have you finding something new and something humorous each time you watch it. A comedy classic from the 1980s, the laughs take off almost from the beginning. With an all-star cast including Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and a host of others, this movie takes what could be considered a terrifying situation and turns it into a laugh riot.

Snakes on a Plane While it may not have won any Academy Awards, if you’re looking for a wild airplane ride, where variety of deadly snakes provide the in-flight entertainment “Snakes on a Plane” could be the movie for you. The plot isn’t all that difficult to follow in this one, so if you’re looking for a story to contemplate for weeks after watching, you may not find your fix here. Pretty much all you need to know is that there are deadly snakes on a plane that escape and terrorize the passengers. Oh yeah, and Samuel L. Jackson is on board to take them on.

Air Force One In this cinematic adventure, we find Harrison Ford, star of famed hits at the Indiana Jones series and Tom Clancy adventures like “Clear and Present Danger” and “Patriot Games”, once again in the thick of the action. As the President of the United States, Mr. Ford faces some clear and present dangers of his own as he battles a group of terrorists, led by none other than Gary Oldman, who is set on using his onboard terrorist tactics to free an imprisoned Russian general.

Con Air Certainly not a movie for the kiddies, “Con Air” can certainly strap you in for a couple hours of action packed excitement. Starring a hit list of big stars, including Nicholas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Ving Rhames, and Steven Buscemi, there’s plenty of action to go around on this wild flight. While the plot is good, focused around an ex-US Ranger trying to get home to see his family by way of a plane ride with a load of dangerous convicts, the full on action of this movie almost makes the story secondary.

Top Gun Although they aren’t always in a plane, Tom Cruise and his fellow Top Gun program recruits spend plenty of time in their fighter jets as they battle for the title of the US Navy’s “Top Gun”. There’s plenty of action, romance, friendship, and cocky attitude to be had in the well known ‘80s hit.
