Your hair style says a lot about you and we can help to make those all important first impressions in your professional and personal life, however it's unfeasible that you will visit a professional hair stylist every day so it's important to know what steps you can take to keep your hair in peak condition.
Let's look at a few basic hair care tips. Healthy, attractive hair should shine. Whether your hair is long or short, light or dark, it should look smooth, silky and shiny. Dull, dry, brittle or frizzy hair is not only undesirable but more-so unhealthy. Everyday things such as shampooing, brushing and blow drying can damage your hair greatly.
1/Use the correct type of shampoo for your hair type. To minimize breakage, make sure that your hair is thoroughly wet before applying shampoo. Use no more than a coin sized drop, and rub the shampoo between your palms first. Lather for no more than 30 seconds. After shampooing, rinsing your hair with cool water can help to seal moisture in the hair shafts. If you have permed or color treated hair, you should use a shampoo for chemically treated hair. Knowing whether your hair is oily or dry is a great place to start and if you are not sure what your hair type is or what type of shampoo to use, ask your hairdresser. Your hairdresser can recommend a specific shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair healthy and shiny.
2/Brushing your hair can actually help improve the shine. Brushing evenly distributes the oils from the scalp throughout the hair shaft. Massaging your scalp with your fingertips can also benefit your hair greatly. You should never brush wet hair because this is when it is most susceptible to damage as it is at its weakest at this time. First of all, squeeze out the excess moisture from your hair with a towel without rubbing your hair between the towel as this can cause severe breakage. If you have long hair that tends to tangle on the ends, you should start brushing on the ends to remove any tangles, and work your way up to the scalp. A good quality leave-in conditioner can be used on the hair to assist in removing tangles. Using a wide tooth comb, comb hair from the ends and work your way up.
3/Many people use blow dryers regularly however if they are used incorrectly, they can cause severe heat damage to your hair. Blow drying can cause the ends of your hair to be dry, frizzy and brittle. It is best to allow your hair to air dry until it is just damp rather than wet. Set your blow dryer on low to medium heat, and keep the blow dryer about 15 to 20 cms away from your hair. Never use a blow dryer set on high heat as it can severely damage your hair. Telltale signs of hair breakage are if you notice stray hairs that are shorter than the rest. They may appear frizzy or out of place; those are the effects of breakage caused by incorrect brushing or blow drying.
4/Get regular trims. Having your hair cut every 6 to 8 weeks can keep your hair healthier and minimise split ends. Even if you are trying to grow your hair long you will benefit from regular trimming.
5/Diet. The health of your hair can directly be attributed to your diet. If you have poor quality hair then the place to start is by looking at your diet. Foods that are high in Omega 3 Fatty Acids are essential for great looking hair. Salmon is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids as well as being filled with vitamin B-12 and iron. A lack of these oils can lead to a dry scalp and make your hair dull looking. If you are Vegetarian, one or two tablespoons of ground flaxseed in your daily diet can contribute some plant-based omega-3 fats. Spinach, and Broccoli is an excellent source of vitamins A and C, which your body needs to produce sebum. The oily substance, secreted by your hair follicles, is the body's natural hair conditioner. For hair growth, food high in proteins are beneficial. Legumes like kidney beans and lentils should be an important part of your hair-care diet. They are also loaded with iron, zinc, and biotin.
All in all, caring for your hair shouldn't be a chore. It's just a good old dose of common sense and consistency. It really is that easy!
