Asia is home to many World Heritage Sites which isn't surprising. With Countries like China, Japan and India as well as other Middle Eastern countries, an abundant number of interesting, historical places can be visited. Let's highlight a few of them here.

Dazu Rock Carvings in China has been identified as one of the World Heritage Sites. Multiple sites contain approximately 50,000 statues presented in a size larger than life with about 100,000 Chinese characters carved into the faces of surrounding cliffs. Began in 650 AD, these enormous carvings are worth the trip.

China is also home to the Mausoleum of the First Olin Emperor in Xi'an. In 1974, well diggers cam upon this site which is known for its terracotta warriors. Considered to be one of the most spectacular tombs on earth, it contains over 800 life-size statues. Among the terracotta soldiers are horses, chariots, musicians, acrobats, strongmen and governmental officials. All of these are in only one of many pits that exist. The estimated total number of soldiers is approximately 8,000.

Lake Baikal in Russia is the largest freshwater lake on earth and is know for its biodiversity. With over 1,085 different plant species and 1,550 animal species, it is not difficult to understand the draw of this particular location. Approximately 80% of the plants and animals found here can be located nowhere else in the world including the Baikal seal.

Sigiriya is an ancient stone fortress located in Sri Lanka. Surrounding this monstrous fortress are moats, gardens, and the remains of structures long crumbled. Strange and interesting stone formations populate the grounds, some of which were manipulated for use by early humans around five thousand years ago. Ancient frescoes and strange terraced gardens provide a glimpse into a culture belonging to some of our earliest ancestors.

Socotra in the Indian Ocean is a chain of four islands. Because they have been cut off from the mainland for so long, Socotra has developed its own very unique set of natural inhabitants. In fact, a full third of its 800 species of flora can't be found anywhere else on the planet. It's this fact that has given it the status as the most alien looking place on Earth, certifiable by the warped looking dragon's blood tree.
