Styles of Wedding Photography

Vicky Morgan

Do you remember looking through old family albums and seeing those sepia photographs of couples on their wedding day standing stiffly side by side staring at the camera? You probably have a very different idea as to how you would want your wedding captured. Luckily, wedding photography in Melbourne has evolved into a field that is not only highly professional but one with different artistic styles.

There are different styles of wedding photography and it is important to remember that most photographers while able to take a range of styles do have a signature style that best translates into their photographs. Here are two of the main types of wedding photography styles.

Formal posed photography- You might want to emulate the classic style of those studio photographs from another generation by opting to have your formal wedding photographs taken. Whether in a studio or at a scenic location formal posed photographs are a throwback to a style that is traditional and classic. This type of wedding photography is good for formal shots of the couple, family, or other group shots. If done in a studio it allows the photographer to have full control of the lighting and background to ensure perfect photographs. Formal posed photographs done on location allow the photographer to choose a scenic background for the couple or retinue to pose in front of making the photograph more dynamic.

Natural Photography/ Candid photography- This style of wedding photography is becoming ever popular because of it is candid nature and the unique memories that are captured in the photographs. Natural photography captures special moments as they unfold throughout the wedding, which means that you get a unique set of wedding photographs. Since the subjects are not always aware of the cameras they are more relaxed and this is reflected in the photographs. With this type of photography, the photographer is able to get very creative and artistic as they are not confined to just one angle or one background. They are able to play with lighting and incorporate themes from the wedding. A Natural photographer needs to be quick on the draw and able to move around to capture all those perfect moments as they occur so if this is the style of wedding photography you want make sure you choose a photographer who is professional and able to pull this style off.

Whether you choose a more contemporary or traditional style of wedding photography remember to ask the wedding photographer what they specialize in to get the best results. You want a wedding photographer who will provide you with the most perfect memories of your special wedding day.
