When we watch a spectacularly great performance by a pianist, we sometimes dream of also being able to perform as well. But advancing years can deter some people from doing something about it. Especially if they had no background training when they were younger.
In reality, it is not really too late to start learning the piano, even when you are in your forties or fifties.
Some people say piano is one of the easiest musical instruments to learn and play. It is also regarded as a good starting point for people who plan to master other musical instruments. The piano is highly depended upon on recognizing and understanding different notes.

In choosing your piano teacher, it is advised that you research about his/her qualifications. Someone who has a wide knowledge in music is an ideal teacher. In addition, the one you choose should also be experienced in performing in front of the crowd.
This way, your instructor will not only give you a strong theoretical background about piano, but give practical advices as well. It is also a plus if your instructor is a member of several organizations and has collections of piano and music materials which can be shared with you.
During the first sessions of your adult piano lessons, you will probably be given lessons on music background and basic musical theories. This will help you obtain a greater and deeper understanding of the craft that you are learning. Additionally, you also have to listen to different kinds of piano recordings to learn by ear.
This is a great help in memorizing the notes and practicing by yourself too. There are some piano recordings that sound complicated, but as soon as you listen very carefully, you will notice that the pianist just keeps on repeating patterns.
If you have done both these steps with your teacher, the next step is for you to strike some keys and create beautiful music. Practice the scales to improve proficiency of your fingers in hitting the keyboard. Start with simple pieces, and then go for the more complicated ones as you advance. Understanding the scales and music theory will help you determine the right key in starting a song.
