What Happens When It Rains In Atlanta

Greg Pierce

Atlanta experienced heavy rains last year. It had caused flooding that lead to the destruction of many properties. By September 26, 2009, that cost of damages rose to $500 million plus ten casualties. Flood went beyond the water levels of dams that's why it was the worst catastrophe in Atlanta. The rain that fell was estimated to be 500 years of floods.

It was a constant 4-day rain fall, from September 15 until the 19th. It was on the last day that heavy rain started to pick up . Remote areas around Atlanta were reported to have 5-inch rainfall that went on continuously for 13 hours. People were warned of flood on the roads and were told not to go driving around that time. Schools were also closed because of the difficulty in transportation as hundreds of roads had already been closed. The water level in Chattahoochee River increased by about 20%, its second highest recorded. This lead to the distruction of Peachtree-Dunwoody Road bridge. The second largest sewage treatment in Southeastern United States, the R.M. Clayton Sewage Treatment Plant located near the river, had its water level rising by 4 feet as the water levels on the river continued to rise. Aside from the R.M. Clayton Plant, Kellogg Company was also forced to close down due to the rising floods.

A disaster request was declared by the Georgia government for several counties. By twenty-fourth of September, President Barack Obama approved the declaration being filed for all the 17 counties of Georgia as requested by its presiding governor. Having a committee on disaster preparedness, therefore, is very important so that the damage can be lowered. Atlanta, until now, is still recovering from that disaster.
