Treatments for Removing Acne Scars

Christian Ray Dinopol

Acne is not only an embarrassing skin condition but it can also leave unsightly scarring. Fortunately there are ways of removing acne scar. Acne scarring can be mild to severe and there are various effective methods used depending on the severity of the scarring.

One of the oldest methods used to rid the skin of acne scarring is called Dermabrasion. Dermabrasion has been used for decades and was used mostly for heavier scarring. First the skin must be numbed or frozen and then a machine which rotates in a circular motion is used to remove damaged outer layers of skin. This procedure can leave the skin raw and sensitive. Also scabs will most likely form and the skin will be red in color for a few weeks following treatment. This procedure is not used as often as it once was because of the potential for scarring and the discomfort it can cause.

Another procedure sometimes used for heavy to moderate scarring is called Laser Resurfacing. It is a professional treatment used for acne scarring which uses a laser to remove damaged skin layer by layer so new skin can grow in place of the old skin. Also this procedure produces natural collagen to form which helps reduce acne scarring. There are some side effects to laser resurfacing such as uneven skin tones in darker skin and infection. After treatment patients may see redness and swelling of the skin which could last for two weeks or more.

For milder forms of acne scarring collagen injections is used. Collagen injections help reduce the appearance of acne scars. This procedure makes the skin look smoother and clearer. Usually the spot of the injection is the only discomfort felt with this method.

A chemical peel is another method used for mild acne scarring. Chemical peels help enhance the skin's complexion and appearance by removing damaged outer layers of the skin. There are some side effects of chemical peels including irritation, redness, stinging, scarring or infection.

Punch grafts is a procedure that is very successful for treating more severe acne scarring made by ice pick type acne. The procedure involves taking skin grafts from behind the ear and from other areas and placing those grafts over areas affected by acne scarring. It takes about one week for the graphs to heal.

Natural methods have been used to effectively treat mild acne scarring. Aloe Vera gel and juice is one of the best natural treatments to help reduce acne scarring. Also lavender oil helps reduce scarring from acne. Tea tree oil applied to the affected area is also very effective. Other natural methods include fresh lemon juice applied with a cotton ball which bleaches the skin and helps reduce acne scars. Also drinking at least eight glasses of water a day is very helpful to help clear the skin from blemishes including scarring because water flushes out all toxins and impurities from the body which leave skin looking radiantly smooth.

In conclusion there are several effective methods available for removing acne scar. Before any of these treatments are used a health care professional should be consulted for best results.
