Ignoring Bad Advice - Work from Home

Lawrence Cole

In an earlier segment I talked about the importance of mentors and choosing mentors properly and I went into some detail in how to distinguish what should qualify someone as a mentor or as a person that you would want to follow. So, today I wanted to go deeper into one particular aspect of that and this is something that you can apply to your life really beyond mentorship.

It really goes pretty much into anything that you do and it goes down into basically taking advice from people and ignoring bad advice that people are going to give you. Whatever you do, set out to do in life, you will always find tons of people with opinions and advice on what you should be doing.

I said before that you have to be careful about whose advice you take because whenever you accept someone’s advice, it’s like also saying yes to whatever reality that you have because the deal is that people can only advise you based out of their own experience. Whenever someone if giving you advice or opinion, that is going to be laced with their experience.

So, whether that is an experience of being fearful and not wanting to step out on faith to do something for themselves, or to get out of a situation that they know that they’re unhappy in, when they give you advice their advice is going to be laced with that. Whether it pertains to a person having an experience where maybe they failed at something, so they feel that everything should be played completely safe or whatever advice they give you is going to be based out of that.

So, make sure that you are really analyzing the situation and the background of people who are trying to give you advice and just know that whatever that background is, if you choose to take that advice you are saying yes to that same situation. You may be saying yes to an amount of debt that someone has. You may be saying yes to a certain amount of failure or to a self limiting mindset or to a bad marriage that they created because they haven’t taken care of business at home to make sure that they achieve some type of balance between their business and their family.

I really wanted to spend just a little bit of time talking in detail about the subject of advice and how to identify bad advice, which is basically by the background of the person that is giving you the advice and whether or not you want to say yes to that being the reality for you as well. Please keep that in mind and make sure that you’re always filtering every bit of advice and information that comes to you through that particular discerning filter in knowing whether or not you want to take on that person’s reality as your own.
